PhD scholarship in the area of financial regulation and governance - University of Bath - UK

Studentship: 3.5 years, full time, fully funded PhD studentship starting in October 2015

Award: £19,830 (2015/16) to include tax free stipend, full EU/Home fees and a training grant worth at least £1,700 p.a.

The Centre for Governance and Regulation (CGR), School of Management, University of Bath invites PhD applications from high quality candidates interested in researching on issues related to financial regulation and governance. The scholarship is sponsored by a private donation by Mr Ian Hay Davison, a former Chief Executive of Lloyd's, Chairman of the Accounting Standards Committee, member of numerous commercial boards (Midland Bank, Morgan Grenfell Asset Management,
Storehouse, Credit Lyonnais Capital Markets, Cadbury Schweppes and Chloride), reformer of the Hong Kong Stock Market (1987-88), and of the Dubai Financial Services Authority to mention just a few of his posts.

The PhD research will be undertaken under supervision of Professor Ania Zalewska and Dr Simone Giansante and is expected to contribute to the current debate on effectiveness and forms of financial regulation and governance.

Candidates interested in this unique opportunity are invited to submit:

  • a CV (including degree classification for any prior degrees) of no more than 3 pages)
  • a short covering letter including contact details for two academic referees
  • a research proposal no longer than 3 pages and related (but not restricted) to one of the following research themes:
    • governance of financial institutions and institutional investors
    • regulation of financial institutions and institutional investors
    • behaviour of financial institutions and institutional investors
    • impact of regulatory reforms on risk taking by financial institutions/investors and their systemic risk
    • impact of regulatory reforms on competitiveness of financial institutions/investors

The research proposal should contain a clear research question or questions, their relation and relevance to the existing literature.

Academic entry requirements:

Candidates must have (or be about to complete) a Masters degree in Finance, Accounting or Economics with Merit or higher, as well as a strong first degree (at least an Upper Second Class Honours or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Personal qualities should include the ability to work independently and the motivation necessary to complete a PhD in three and half years.

Applicants must be new PhD students to the School of Management. Annual contribution of studentship will depend on satisfactory academic performance by holders.
