[STBI-26/11/2015] The Effects of Social Network on Employment

Abstract

In recent years, it would seem that social network becomes a new search method in the labor market. Getting a job through a social network is prevalent. Social network becomes the effective channel for providing information about job opportunities for job seekers. However, in Vietnam, there are few studies about the social network and the effects of it on getting job, especially regarding to young job seekers who have just graduated from the universities. Further, in the developing countries such as Viet Nam, there is the asymmetric information between job seekers and employers. This leads to the failures in recruiting and suffer heavy losses for organizations. They need channels to check about the information’s candidates when recruit. So, this study aims to measure the social network of individuals and investigate the effects of social network on employment. In this study, both quantitative and qualitative research methods are used to analyze the results in this study. The result of this study shows that the variables, included strategy of finding first job, location, position of father (Father is manager, expert or staff), position of mother (Mother is manager or staff), the education of father and the education of mother, are not statistically significant at significant level 1%, 5% and 10% respectively. In contrast to these variables, the social network (the number of individuals you help, the number of close friends, social network index), part – time job, position of mother (mother is expert), personal power and gender variables are negative and statistically significant at significant level 1%, 5% and 10% respectively.

Mr. Nguyen Tran Minh Thanh is lecturer at School of Economics, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City. His teaching and research focus on human resource management, and skill development. Mr. Thanh awarded master degree from The French - Vietnamese Center for Management Education (CFVG) in 2015.
